In the current labor market, it is becoming increasingly challenging for companies not only to attract new talent but also to retain their existing employees. A significant number of employees (27%) leave their employer within the first year, according to the Learning & Development Monitor 2024, an annual study by Studytube. This problem underscores the importance of effective development and recruitment strategies within organizations.

The critical need for upskilling

The necessity for upskilling is further highlighted by the fact that many employees lack the skills needed to perform optimally in their current roles—according to research by Gartner, 58% of employees are missing essential skills. This creates an urgent need for companies to invest in developing their human capital to remain relevant now and in the future.

Funding training: a divided field

One of the stumbling blocks in the development process is the funding of training. There is a clear difference in expectations between employees and employers regarding who should bear the costs of upskilling. While 79% of employees expect their employer to cover the full cost, only 44% of employers believe that employees should contribute a portion themselves.

Generation Z: new norms in learning

Special attention goes to the younger generation of employees, Gen Z, who view learning and development differently. They prefer learning during work hours and take more responsibility for their own development than previous generations. However, they also expect clear guidelines and support from their employers on what and how to learn.

Skill-based learning: the future

The solution appears to lie in skill-based learning, where training is specifically focused on the skills needed for each role. This type of education, often enhanced by artificial intelligence, allows organizations to offer flexible and personalized learning experiences, even within smaller companies without extensive L&D departments.

The role of AI in personal development

AI plays a crucial role in modernizing the learning environment by enabling the creation of individual learning paths that meet the unique needs of each employee. Nearly one-third of HR professionals are already using AI, and more than half believe that it can increase the effectiveness of learning and development.
